Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is a complex endocrine disorder that affects 5 to 10% of the female population. It is the most common endocrine disorder, and is also the leading cause of infertility.

Western medicine makes this diagnosis when the following symptoms are present:

  • Weight Gain or Inability to Lose Weight
  • Absent or Irregular Periods
  • Excess Hair Growth
  • Thinning Hair
  • Acne
  • Ovarian Cysts
  • Skin tags

Therapies As They Relate To PCOS

PCOS is often a reason that women experience fertility issues and medications are given to mitigate the effects of this hormonal imbalance. The medicines may help to treat the symptoms, however they do not address the root of the problem.

Nutrition & PCOS

Nearly 50% of women with PCOS are overweight or obese. Improving your diet and exercise program by making lifestyle changes may reduce your risk for developing chronic diseases associated with PCOS such as diabetes, heart disease and endometrial cancer.

Suggestions for a PCOS diet:

  • Consume a wide variety of whole foods
  • Aim to eat 25-30 grams of fiber per day
  • Limit sugars and enriched carbohydrates
  • Limit salt intake (aim for less than 2400 milligrams of salt per day)
  • Choose unsaturated fats

CranioSacral Therapy for PCOS

CranioSacral therapy (CST) treats symptoms of PCOS by normalizing overall pelvic and spinal biomechanics. CST helps to keep the pelvic region healthy, and minimizes soft tissue irritation and discomfort.

CST releases fascia surrounding every system in the body; specific work on the pelvic diaphragm can also alleviate cysts and adhesions. Hormonal imbalances may be helped by releasing fascial restrictions throughout the neck & suboccipital regions as well as the sphenoid bone, allowing for better function of the pituitary gland. By doing so, this restores more normal function of the endocrine system thus creating better hormonal balance.

Yoga & PCOS

PCOS is a disorder of the endocrine system. Yoga is said to be beneficial for controlling the endocrine glands.

Yoga, if practiced regularly, helps to regulate the endocrine metabolism by teaching your body to better deal with the physical effects of stress. It would be unreasonable to try to reduce stress in our lives as stressors can often be an unpredictable part of life. Instead practicing activities that help our bodies better accommodate these stressors is the key.

Yoga incorporates deep breathing exercises and in combination with thoughtful physical movement helps to regulate our metabolic systems.

Reiki & PCOS

Reiki supports healing on physical, mental and emotional levels. As the cause is unknown and symptoms of PCOS can affect women deeply in all these areas, Reiki is a powerful tool for healing.

Treatment may focus on the Root and Sacral Chakras. Connecting to the Root Chakra can bring about balance in the reproductive organs, adrenal glands and immune system. When there is a disconnect at this level it can manifest in high stress or depression; infertility is one of the physical ailments associated to an imbalanced Root Chakra.

The Sacral Chakra is the centre for femininity, creativity and intuition. If unbalanced, it may present as fear of change and lack of compassion and nurturing.
