Improving Your Health- Improves Your Chances of Fertility
The Why of What We Do – Ann’s Story
Clinic Director – Dr.Ann Zee, BCom, R.Ac, DTCM, FABORM (Fellow of the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine)
A few years ago, I remember treating a long time patient with Acupuncture and then suddenly having one of those “a-ha” moments. I really enjoyed this woman’s company as she was strong and intelligent and had forged her own niche in life.
We had spent many months together, sharing tears and angst throughout her journey and it would devastate me when she would tell me her pregnancy tests were negative. Both of our anxieties grew.
My a-ha moment came in the realization that I had to put some of my therapeutic ego aside and consider adding other therapies into her wellness mix. I knew she required nutrition counselling, relaxation/energy work and a structure to give her a sense of control.
I began researching different therapies and talking with other people in the healing field. I referred her to a few trusted therapists and made some lifestyle suggestions. As beneficial as it was for her, it was frustrating for me because the timely communication I needed for my progress notes/monitoring, was challenging.
Hey, why don’t I open up a place where everyone is working under the same roof and the communication is centralized? The Holistic Institute of Health & Fertility was born!
Why do People Come to the Holistic Institute of Healthy and Fertility?
We find people are looking for a place that houses therapists with experience working with fertility and prenatal issues. All of our therapists are professionally trained and highly qualified in their fields.
We Combine Different Modalities
Acupuncture and traditional Chinese Medicine is the foundation of our fertility therapeutic expertise, however, massage therapy, yoga and nutrition are key elements to what we do as well. We have developed a system where all therapists communicate with each other thus making the patient the center of care.
Communication is a key part of the success of our clinic.
HIHF Fertility Programs or just Acupuncture - Where Are You on Your Healing Journey?
This decision is simply based on where you think you are in your healing journey. My experience of speaking with hundreds of women/couples over the years is that people fall into 3 groups.
The first group are people who have been trying for about a year, have done some research about fertility and acupuncture or have a friend who tried acupuncture with success. They are a bit skeptical of alternative therapies and feel as though they have other areas of their lives under control.
Check out our ACUPUNCTURE page
The second group are already working with Western Medicine and are preparing for assisted reproductive treatments, either a few rounds of hormone-related drugs, IUI or IVF. They have found, either through research or friend’s experiences, that acupuncture may increase their chances of conception.
Check out our IVF/IUI page
The third group have been trying for more than a year, are over 33 years old, are finding they need a structured plan and are now open to trying other things because what they have been doing has not been working.

Which group do you find yourself in? The first and second groups tend to just work with Acupuncture & herbals alone. If you think you may be interested in our programs, check out our PROGRAMS page.
One Question we get Asked a lot- “What are Your Success Rates?”
As a holistic medicine, that question is difficult to answer as we see conception and birth as the product of mind body wellness. When we assess people, we are looking for the imbalances that have brought about the present fertility challenges.
Typically, patients present with the following western medical diagnoses;
- Hormonal imbalances
- Irregular or anovulation
- Irregular menstrual cycle
- Endometrial inflammation
- Adhesions, fibroids, scarring, uterine abnormalities
- PCOS-imbalanced insulin sensitivity
- Inconsistencies with sperm morphology
We treat individual factors that present as fertility challenges. Western medicine has statistics on birth and live birth rates. We have a different measuring stick. What specific issue are we treating? We have lots of success with PCOS, endometriosis and poor sperm issues in terms of mitigating the symptoms of each.
Treating “Unknown Infertility” is Where Traditional Chinese Medicine Shines
Western Medicine has not yet developed the diagnostic tools to determine all causes of infertility. In fact, it has only been in the last few years that the field of Reproductive Endocrinology has grown to the degree that it has. Advances in ART (assisted reproductive technology) such as IVF and IUI procedures have heralded this discipline as leading edge science.
Our medicine, Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been in practice for thousands of years. We use TCM diagnostic tools for determining various imbalances that may cause infertility. Again, we look at the person in their entirety taking note of all of the subtleties that would typically be ignored.
Improving Fertility – Understanding What Can be Done?
At HIHF we have had great success helping our patients get pregnant, stay pregnant and have easy deliveries with structured programs that combine traditional Chinese medicine/ acupuncture, massage, chiropractic and nutrition.
Our goal is to help you to feel better and do everything possible to help you achieve your fertility goals. We will help you to feel physically stronger and more balanced emotionally with our treatments. If you consistently work with us for 3 months-you would feel more ”well” on day 90 than you felt on day 1. At the end of 3 months, we would then recommend that you continue with us on a less-frequent visit-maintenance schedule so to help you maintain the balance you have achieved with us.
Achieving Balance with Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture (TCM)
Acupuncture and TCM have proven to be effective in improving fertility and increasing the success of IVF/IUI pregnancies. Acupuncture is used to prepare the body for pregnancy by balancing and relaxing the patient.
Clinical studies have shown that women who had acupuncture in conjunction with IVF had a greater chance of having a successful embryo transfer, compared to those that had no treatment. Relaxing the patient with acupuncture may reduce the biological stress response, thereby increasing blood flow to the uterus which in turn helps to facilitate the transfer and implantation.
Our acupuncturists will help determine the state of your imbalance(s) and prescribe an individualized program of herbs, acupuncture and diet to help you create the correct biological and emotional environment for increased success with fertility and pregnancy.
Get Moving with Massage
Combined with Acupuncture Fertility massage consists of several massage techniques: a series of deep-tissue strokes, myofascial release, reflexology and more. With uterine massage, femoral massage, lymphatic drainage and reflexology on points specific to the reproductive organs and the reproductive organs gain improved circulation, bringing fresh oxygenated flood and nutrients to the uterus and ovaries.
Scar tissue is relaxed and blockages of the fallopian tubes may be cleared. This protocol also addresses stomach, liver and intestinal health to clear blockages, bring about ideal uterine position thus helping to achieve hormonal balance.
HIHF houses some amazing Massage Therapists who have your best interests as their therapeutic focus.
Relax with Yoga
Fertility Yoga increases relaxation, blood flow to the uterus and reproductive organs (improving egg quality), creates a sense of peace and well-being and teaches the body to become more open and less rigid.
