HIHF Talent

The Holistic Institute of Health and Fertility has a fantastic team of talented and experienced therapists who all have their own unique specialities

Dr. Ann Zee, Clinic Director, Registered Acupuncturist, DTCM, BCom, FABORM

Ann’s Background:

The Holistic Institute of Health and Fertility is Ann’s vision for providing a model of collaborative alternative healthcare to Calgarians.

“Originally, I didn’t want to work with fertility issues. It scared me as I felt that I couldn’t really offer the help women/couples were looking for. However, the universe had different plans for me and my fertility case load began to steadily increase over the years. I didn’t advertise that I worked with fertility, nor had any literature about it. People just kept on showing up on my  doorstep. In the last few years, I have found my greatest success to be working with other therapies in conjunction with the acupuncture/TCM. As everyone has different needs, putting together customized treatment plans just naturally evolved. Another very important area of practice that has emerged is prenatal care. Once our patients achieve conception, helping them (and baby) to remain  healthy has been key.

My drive comes simply from my desire to be in service to others. I honestly do not know what else we are supposed to do here on this earth.”

Ann received her degree from the Alberta College of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).  During her career, Ann spent time abroad studying under famous Acupuncturist Dr. Anton Jarasurya at the South Colombo Teaching Hospital in Sri Lanka where, daily, she treated hundreds of locals with Acupuncture and TCM.

Over the years Ann has lend her time to volunteer activities including AIDS Calgary and the Calgary Women’s Center where she has sat on their governance board and taught workshops introducing the concept of TCM. Ann is a long time Provincial examiner with the Alberta College of Acupuncturists.

Ann also has her FABORM designation which means she is a Fellow with the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine.

The ABORM has been formed by leading professionals in Oriental Reproductive Medicine who have come together voluntarily with a resolve to meet the patient and physician demand for a demonstration of knowledge of care in this field.” www.aborm.org

Dr. Gillian (Smith) Sawyer, Chiropractor

North Location

Gillian’s Background:

Pregnancy is such an exciting time but can be challenging especially if you are experiencing pain. I feel so lucky to be able to help women through these times and provide a safe, comfortable environment for them. It’s such a great feeling to hear my expectant moms say, “I was looking so forward to my appointment this week” or “I wish I would have known about this earlier”.In my practice I like to use an individualized approach taking into consideration the specific needs of each patient. Beyond passive care, I think it’s important to educate my patients and give them tools for everyday life that will allow them to function without pain or discomfort. Those tips on how to get up from a chair or turn over in bed while you’re pregnant can really make a significant impact. The intriguing way the body works is really the foundation of why I became a Chiropractor.
In all the years of studying anatomy and biomechanics I was always astounded at how everything is literally connected together. That song, “the hip bones connected to the…” couldn’t be more true; the anatomy doesn’t lie. The amazing part I find is the way everything is pieced together in our body to create function and adaptation to constant change. Two great examples of this are during pregnancy and the development of a child. This is what led me to pregnancy and pediatric care.Early on as a student I became a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA), and pursued training to care for the specific needs of infants, little one, and pregnant women. My training in perinatal and infant care and my clinical experience has given me a great appreciation and skill set to help women and children through the amazing and exciting times of change and adaptation.Dr. Gillian (Smith) Sawyer, Doctor of Chiropractic, BKin, Certified ART® provider, Webster Technique certified, Member of the ICPA.

Since then, she has spent time working in a pregnancy and pediatric focused clinic as well as working in a small town in British Columbia.  There, she treated patients from 5 months old to the very elderly and everything in between.  Dr. Hrynuik’s passion has led her to pursue further training in order to accommodate for the specific needs of pregnant women and their little ones.  Treating techniques are modified, gentle and individualized to each patient.

As well, Dr. Hrynuik has always had a passion for health, proper nutrition and prevention of illness.  She has been active throughout her life and continues to pursue her love of yoga, cycling, hiking and working out.  It is her mission to inspire and educate her patients and their families to live their best, healthiest lives in the most natural way possible.

Calgary Prenatal ChiroDr. Stephanie Moody, Chiropractor

North Location

Dr. Stephanie Moody is passionate about health and wellness. Her goal is to help her patients and their families thrive, by helping them lead healthy, active lives, naturally.

As a chiropractor, Dr. Moody’s focus is on the treatment of prenatal, postnatal and pediatric patients. She received her Bachelor of Kinesiology in Southern Ontario prior to completing her Doctor of Chiropractic at New York Chiropractic College. She started her career with an interest in sports chiropractic but quickly became most excited about treating expecting moms and their little ones. She then went on to become a member of the ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatric Association) with further training and certification in the Webster Technique, which allows her to effectively treat and meet the specific needs of pregnant women and children.

There is nothing quite as rewarding as helping an expectant mom and their little one have a healthy, thriving pregnancy and birth.  Pregnancy is such a special and exciting time for expecting moms. It is also a time of great change, especially when it comes to your body. It is wonderful to be able to help expecting moms adapt to these changes, ease aches and pains and make for a more enjoyable, healthy pregnancy, birth and motherhood.

When we are truly living in our bodies we find we are there to answer whatever opportunities appear and are knocking”

I took my very first yoga class after the birth of my daughter. My body felt so foreign to me and many other forms of activity felt discouraging and frustrating. That very first yoga class changed the course of my entire life and I am forever grateful to the friend who suggested I give it a try.

Fast forward a few years, a 200 hour teacher training, a Prenatal and a Kids yoga teacher training and I’m now doing what I love everyday- meeting and guiding wonderful new people on their own journey to betterment through yoga. Yoga will transform you both physically and mentally. Through yoga I realized the fears I had holding me back in life were nothing more than thoughts in my head- how I choose to react to these thoughts is what really makes the difference. After my yoga teacher trainings I went on to do what I’d been too fearful to do before- I became a Birth Doula and am now serving many wonderful women on their journeys to motherhood.

“I am so grateful to have added the Holistic Institute of Health & Fertility to my teaching schedule. This is truly a place of healing that welcomes everyone!”

Joanne PicJoanne Dmytruk, Yoga Instructor

Joanne started practicing yoga when a friend who was diagnosed with cancer  was looking for a way to cope. At first she didn’t know what to expect. Being plus size there were no classes designed for people like her, but it only took a few classes, the most amazing teachers and Joanne was hooked.

It’s been an incredible journey. Yoga has taught Joanne two things, there is no problem that can’t be solved if you are willing to go to your mat and be still, and option B-spend a minimum of 10 minutes hanging out in a hammock.

“I believe everyone can do yoga…it’s not about touching your toes it’s about what you learn on the way down.”

Liz PLiz Pokol, Yoga Instructor

Yoga has allowed Liz to become stronger within and more in tune with herself. She has found her bliss and is happier and healthier because of it. Liz has been practicing yoga for years and has received her 200- hour teacher training, a 95-hour prenatal teacher training and has completed her kids yoga teacher training. Candace photoCandace DeFreitas-Stephenson, Yoga Instructor

Candace started her yoga practise over a decade ago, being drawn back to the mat during times of stress. She realized yoga was helping to create balance in her life. After experiencing two miscarriages and turning to yoga as part of her healing process, Candace knew she was meant to get her yoga teaching certification.

Candace loves teaching Prenatal, Yin Yang, Yin, Restorative and Vinyasa Flow Yoga, believing strongly in the power of an awesome Savasana. One of her favourite aspects of being a yoga teacher is building a practise to work for each individual, and the continuous learning process which comes with it. Each person in a yoga class is at a different place in their yoga journey and she is so honoured to be a part of it.

Eliza Arentewicz, Yoga Instructor

Eliza took her first yoga class in 2000.  She was instantly intrigued and inspired, and still is, so many years later.  Early on, she realized that one day, she would become a yoga teacher; she wanted to share her passion for yoga with others.

Yoga became an instrumental part of her life; it got her through two pregnancies and helped her recover physically and emotionally, following these enormous changes in her life.  In 2015, she took her 200 hour and therapeutic yoga training and now truly enjoys sharing yoga with others, of all age-groups.  For Eliza, watching bodies move and creating a space where one may allow oneself to instill compassion, acceptance, ease and tranquility for themselves is amazing.

“It is a privilege to teach at The Holistic Institute of Health and Fertility; in such a caring atmosphere.”

After graduating and working in a corporate environment Ashley found that a desk was not for her.

“I attended hot yoga teacher training with Kim McMullen and found my calling. Teaching yoga allows me to help people understand the mind body connection and how it affects their health, while giving me the opportunity to be a lifelong student.”

Courtney Simmonds, Yoga Instructor

Courtney was introduced to yoga in 2010 after breaking her back and pelvis in a snowboarding accident. It was suggested to her that yoga could be a beneficial way to rehabilitate her injury and calm her mind from the trauma. She fell in love with the mind, body connection! In 2012 she decided to take her 200hr Yoga teacher training and has been practicing/ teaching ever since.

Learning to accept your body as it changes each day and not passing judgment on it is a big part of Courtney’s personal practice.

“What you are able to do today might be different than yesterday and tomorrow. Let us accept with grace, exactly where we are and work with it.”
